Alongside the commitment to student education the Academy is
renowned for its development in medical science and research. Since the time of its foundation the research
undertaken at the Academy has had a great impact on the practical and
theoretical medicine. Prominent scholarly research areas include clinical
immunology, cardiac surgery, hyperbaric medicine, hygienic issues of safety
and public health protection, cardiology, pulmonology and pediatric
pulmonology. The success of the Academy’s research strategy has been
confirmed in the number of registered patients within the country and
abroad, amount of publications and different research projects.
6 scientific and research institutes work in the Academy in the
areas of dentistry, cardiovascular pathology, herniology, urology,
rheumatology, surgical infection. There is also the Central Scientific and
Research Laboratory, laboratories of haemobionics, biomedcybernetics and
computerization in medicine in the Academy.
The Academy has 3 innovation structures: the
patent service, the scientific and research section, and the department of
commercialization of innovative projects and developments.
The Academy provides postgraduate courses in 40 specialties and

(Internship, Residency, Ph.D. courses) are offered to many young
specialists.
Presently Academy’s scientists conduct their scientific research
within the united program adopted for the entire Academy: “Improvement of
Measures for Disease Prevention and Treatment in Modern Environment”,
consisting of 6 target programs, 15 sectoral and integrated scientific
programs. 11 theoretical and clinical scientific schools were historically
formed and are actively developed.
Student involvement in scientific research is
greatly encouraged. To support interest in pursuing research the Students
Scientific Society and the Association of Young Scientists were organized.
They have thus an ample opportunity for the full range of research activity
in different medical subjects and fields. 1560 students work at 60 sections
of the Students Scientific Society (SSS). The results of their work are
annually presented at the conferences of “SSS week”, students conferences
of other educational institutions, All-Russian and international meetings
and symposiums. The scientific works of SSS members are published in
central and international press.
